On November 23-24, 2015, seven students and the sponsors of the Jr. Beta Club of Surgoinsville Middle School traveled to Nashville to participate and compete in the 2015 Beta Club State Convention that was held at the Gaylord Hotel. Over 7000 members of Jr. Beta Clubs all over the state attended the convention. Students competed in academic, talent, and art competitions. Each student competed in at least two events. SMS students participated in group talent, art, and several individual academic competitions. Four students, Noah Dillard, Jaden-Ann Fraser, Lydia Culbertson, and Samantha Foster, competed in a two-part Quiz Bowl. The first part was a written test, and over 100 school teams participated. The SMS Quiz Bowl team won a spot in the final oral test by being in the top eight teams. After the oral competition, the SMS team brought home a third place plaque for their efforts. Along with Dillard, Fraser, Culbertson, and Foster, the other SMS members that participated in other competitions were Meghan Lewis, Josie Stapleton, and Abbie Trent. Sponsors Annalisa Bowery and Brittney Marsh are very proud of the students that worked fundraisers since last year in order to attend the convention. Congratulations to all of our students for their academic achievements at SMS and at the state convention.
