Surgoinsville Middle School Library Syllabus

Course Description -

Once a week, students will attend library class. Students will gain information about literacy skills. This course is a combination of digital citizenship skills, literature appreciation, writing skills, research skills, and technology related to the library. Students will learn how to best use library resources to conduct research for personal reading and all school subjects. This course will include extensive use of print and online resources.

5th Graders -

Will focus on finding and selecting books for personal use.

Will learn how to use the library, as well as the online catalog.

Will learn digital citizenship skills.

Will learn about a variety of genres and print materials.

6th Graders -

Will continue to focus on finding and selecting books for personal use.

Will continue to learn to use the library, as well as the online catalog.

Will learn digital citizenship skills.

7th Graders -

Will continue to focus on finding and selecting books for personal use.

Will learn digital citizenship skills.

Will learn to use print and digital sources for research purposes.

Will learn how and why to cite sources using the M.L.A. style, as well as copyright laws and how to avoid plagiarism.

Will learn how to determine if a resource is reliable.

Will learn how to create a presentation in various formats.

8th Graders -

Will continue to focus on finding and selecting books for personal use.

Will learn digital citizenship skills.

Will continue to learn how to create a presentation in various formats.

Will continue to learn copyright laws and how to avoid plagiarism.

Will learn how to use “The Big 6” steps to complete a research paper.

Will participate in a “Genius Hour” project.

Library Policies-

Students are allowed to check out 2 library books at a time.

Students should bring back library books in a timely manner.

Students will sit in their assigned seat in the library.

Students will follow all rules as stated in the Surgoinsville Middle School Handbook.

Students should respect the library, the librarian, other students, and the books and equipment.

Destiny-

Students will be trained to use the Destiny Online Library Management System. This is our digital card catalog. Destiny can be assessed through the Library tab of the Surgoinsville Middle School webpage.

Google Classroom-

Students will join the library Google classroom. This is where class announcements will be made. Also, class assignments will be found in the Google Classroom.

Bio

Hello! I am the librarian at Surgoinsville Middle School! Born and raised in Hawkins County, I graduated from Cherokee High School. I went on to receive my Bachelors in Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and my Master's in Library Media and Technology from East Tennessee State University. I have taught 5th, 6th, and 7th grade math and 5th grade science. I love being the librarian at Surgoinsville Middle School and hope you will visit our library soon!
